USTA Tennessee Honors High School Coaches Commited to No-Cut Program |
|
USTA Tennessee thanks all of the high school coaches who are commited to a no-cut program. Every week in April and May we will highlight one or two of those coaches. For more information on the No-Cut Coach registry go to http://www.usta.com/USTA/Home/Coaches/HighSchool.aspx Union County High School: No-Cut Team of the Week Kathy Cox coaches the Union County High School tennis team, both boys and girls squads. She registered as a no-cut coach when the registry began and she was coaching teams at a school with no courts. The students and coach had to drive into Knoxville to access courts for practice and consequently home matches were not had. Because of her passion for these students, Kathy successfully put together a fundraising campaign and with the help of donations and a grant from the USTA, there are now four tennis courts on the campus of Union County High School. From the results below, it’s obvious that having your own facility does produce more success for the team. The boys took second in the Team Districts last year. Currently they are 9-1. 6 boys ( 4 seniors and 2 juniors). According to Coach Cox, boys have an excellent chance to win the team district. Their only loss was to Pigeon Forge which they had to forfeit 2 games. The girls’ team is 5-5. There are 6 seniors, 3 sophomores, and 3 freshmen for a total of 12. The gate is left open to the courts and the community is taking advantage of having a local facility. Every weekend someone is using the courts. Due to the growth on the high school team, Kathy has taken on an assistant coach this year. She graduated from Lincoln Memorial University where she was on scholarship for 4 years of tennis. This past summer Kathy did a one day summer camp for the MOMs group in Union County with their children to introduce tennis to them. These are children that are home schooled. She will be doing another one this summer. Tennis is becoming more popular around this area. Alot has to do with the courts being available and the fact that the local papers are putting in the teams stats. |
