Oak Ridge Tennis Club Focuses On Ten & Under Children This Spring

The Oak Ridge Tennis Club has planned monthly activities in 2010 that focus on implementing the United States Tennis Association’s goal to attract, retain, and develop more 6-10 year olds in its community. In February the Club is hosting a Winter “Tennis” Olympics. Entrants will compete in teams of two in a variety of age divisions and compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. The format allows the novice and experienced participants work together in five different events. The events test the hand-eye coordination of the male/male, female/female, and male/female teams. Tennis experience may help but all events enable children to play with customized balls and scoring, allowing them to play and learn at the same time. The event will introduce youth to tennis using age appropriate equipment and ensure their experience is fun and supported by their friends and family. The Olympics will also promote the Oak Ridge Tennis Club’s 2010 youth program and give interested individuals to register for future events. If you have questions about the Olympics or any of the Oak Ridge Tennis Club’s 2010 programs, email your questions to the oakridgetennisclub@gmail.com, call David Bowman at 865-481-0512 or review http://davidbowman.usptapro.com/ to see the Tennis Club's 2010 monthly event schedule.

The Tennis Club in conducting two tennis events in March to introduce how the USTA’s QuickStart and Jr. Team Tennis Leagues can be used to grow 10 and under tennis in Oak Ridge. On March 10th a town-hall meeting that’s free and open to the public will be conducted by two the USTA’s Southern Section staff. The workshop will introduce elementary school PE teachers, sports organizations, youth clubs and parents how the USTA is supporting the game of tennis so boys and girls can compete on teams and ensure the game grows with the age of the child. Go online at consumers.quickstarttennis.com to see how this new format provides a fast, fun way to get kids into tennis-- and keep them playing.

The second event on March 24th is a free clinic for elementary and middle school children. The clinic will be conducted by the Oak Ridge volunteers trained on March 10th and sponsored by the Oak Ridge Tennis Club. The event will include a variety of tennis activities for a wide range of participants with a mix of individual challenges. Just like the Tennis Olympics in February, the free clinic will promote the Oak Ridge Tennis Club’s 2010 youth program and give parents a chance to register for future events.
